The Armed Forces Network for Sussex and Kent & Medway has been shortlisted for the Military and Civilian Health Partnership Award at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising the Network’s outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, shortlisted the Armed Forces Network despite the tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants. The Armed Forces Network was selected based on our ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that we had on patient and staff experiences within the health and social care sector.

The Armed Forces Network for Sussex and Kent & Medway brings together organisations to help make sure people with a background in the British Armed Forces are able to access support and get help on issues ranging from physical or mental health, housing or employment, welfare or social. The Network, which includes members from the NHS, the MoD, police, local authorities, serving personnel as well as charities and other local organisations, aims to raise awareness of the support available and improve the lives of the Armed Forces Community (AFC).

Led by Kate Parkin on behalf of the NHS CCGs, the Network in Sussex was established in 2011 and Kent & Medway in 2016.  There are now over 1000 Service Champions from a wide range of organisations and disciplines who now have the skills and knowledge to support them.

The Network acts as a knowledge hub with information and support, provided through dedicated websites, training, awareness raising events, and community engagement. Providing 1-1 support through direct enquiries into the Network from the AFC and professionals, attending drop-in sessions and Association gatherings, we also work with professionals whether it is in the commissioning or delivery of services with ‘how to guides’ and factsheets.

Kate Parkin, Director for the Armed Forces Network said “I am really honoured and proud to have the Network shortlisted for the Military and Civilian Health Partnership Award at this year’s HSJ Awards.  To be shortlisted from amongst the other outstanding work being done to support the Armed Forces Community is an amazing achievement and reflects the good practice and collaboration between the different organisations in Sussex and Kent & Medway and the dedication of the Armed Forces Service Champions to making a difference.”
